AB The main purpose of this Final Degree Project is to offer a study on the origins andevolution of prisons, from its first antecedents, in Ancient Greece, until the beginning of the20th century, with the promulgation of the Royal Decree of 1913, precedent of theprogressive system of scientific individualization, still in force in many legal systems andincluded in our current General Penitentiary Organic Law.For this, an approximation to some of the first forms of prison of the time will beoffered, emphasizing the "Galeras", the Women's Prisons, as well as the "Houses ofCorrection" or "Workhouses", which emerged both in Spain as in other countries.Subsequently, the different prison systems that emerged in North America will be analyzed,and the importance that the progressive system of Colonel Montesinos will have in Spain.Likewise, the characteristic notes of the most relevant regulations that arose in the 19th andearly 20th centuries will be exposed.
