It mainly affects peri and postmenopausal women and its prevalence in the general population is low, considered because of this as a neurologic rare disease. Its etiology is not well known, and its diagnostic criteria is not established. Its therapeutic approach is complex, and it depends on the distinction in primary BMS, which is the idiopathic form, and secondary BMS, caused by known local and/or systemic factors. In primary BMS, there is not a treatment of choice and it is only palliative, where the first options are nonpharmacological and topical pharmacological therapies, followed by systemic pharmacological therapies if there is no improvement. In secondary BMS, the specific treatment of the underlying causes cures the disease. For the purpose of improving the quality of life of the patients, it is important to make a right diagnosis, considering their symptomatology and the possible causative agents, in order to personalise and choose the appropriate treatment for them.
