AB What came to be labelled «new journalism» in the sixties or«non-fiction novel» in recent years has expanded the margins ofthe American novel in a way that deserves critical attention.Leaving aside some of its original claims and generic pretentions—formulated by Tom Wolfe and overenthusiastically reexaminedby others— this critical survey explores the common field sharedby fiction and literary reportage and tries to bridge the gap openedbetween them with the coming of the new journalism.
