RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Clock without Hands: Carson McCullers y el compromiso existencial con la realidad A1 González Groba, Constante AB This paper is a study of the thematic aspects that make ClockWithout Hands different from Carson Mc Cullers' previous novelsand place it in the tradition of existentialist philosophy andliterature. In McCullers' last novel the problem of personalidentity is solved when the individual accepts the full responsibilityof his freedom, makes an ethical choice and commits himself to aworld he shares with his fellow humans. Two characters, Maloneand Jester, are studied in detail, because the existential dilemmasare especially embodied in them. The paper concludes with anattempt to elucidate the reasons why this most optimistic ofMcCullers' novels has more'flaws in construction and characterizationthan any of those which preceded it.
