Lakoff (1985) claimsthat psychological states or processes like the emotions are conceptualizedprimarily via metaphor and metonymy, which he demonstratesconvincingly in his study of the linguistic expressions of the concept ofanger in American English. In the following essay, a characterization of theconcept of depression in American English is attempted along the followinglines: first, the relevant metaphors are isolated and briefly analysed, thenthe metonymies motivating them are discussed, and finally an approximateformal cognitive model of the concept is proposed on the basis of thesedata.
