This isespecially important in peripheral regions that are characterized bylow innovative dynamism. This paper analyses the entrepreneurialprocess in a European peripheral region, the Canary Islands, Spain. It attempts to determine possible cultural specificities and the roleof motivation in the entrepreneurial process. To do this, an analysisof entrepreneurial intention (EI) is framed within the theory ofplanned behaviour and using motivation, opportunity and abilitytheory. An empirical study was carried out using a sample of 1457university students participating in the Global UniversityEntrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey project. Results indicate thatmotivation influences EI directly and indirectly through anindividual’s attitude towards entrepreneurial behaviour. Theperception of business opportunities is also a significant antecedentof entrepreneurial motivation. Consequently, entrepreneurialeducation and policies to foster entrepreneurship in peripheralregions should not attempt to transform individuals’ attitudestowards entrepreneurship directly, but rather focus on improvingmotivation using intensive pedagogical strategies in creativity thatgo beyond mere informative content. Methodologies and contentfocused on recognizing opportunities and problem-solving wouldalso be effective elements in educational programmes ofentrepreneurship.
