Our objectives are to assesswhether intussusceptive angiogenesis (IA) participates invasculature formation in non-infiltrating angiolipomaand, if so, to explore how thrombi are involved in the IAprocess. For this purpose, we studied angiolipomaspecimens (n: 52), using immunohistochemistry, andconfocal and electron microscopy. The results showedthe presence of folds and pillars, hallmarks of IA,dividing the vessel lumen. Folds showed a cover formedby reoriented endothelial cells from the vessel wall, orfrom newly formed folds, and a core initially formed bythrombus fragments (clot components as transitionalcore), which was replaced by extracellular matrix andinvaginating pericytes establishing numerous peg-andsocket junctions with endothelial cells (mature core). Acondensed plasmatic electron-dense material surroundedand connected folds and pillars with each other and withthe vascular wall, which suggests a clot role in fold/pillararrangement. In conclusion, we contribute to IAparticipation in capillary network formation inangiolipoma and the immunohistochemical andultrastructural events by which microthrombosisfacilitates IA. Therefore, in addition to the histogenesisof angiolipoma, we provide an easily obtainablesubstrate for future studies on clot component action inIA, of clinical and therapeutic interest.
