A1 Sánchez Borges, Iván A1 Álvarez González, Carlos Javier A2 Psicología CognitivaSocial y Organizacional K1 cross-modal priming K1 iconic gesture K1 semantic priming K1 word processing AB Previous studies using cross-modal semantic priming have found thaticonic gestures prime target words that are related with the gestures. In thepresent study, two analogous experiments examined this priming effectpresenting prime and targets in high synchrony. In Experiment 1,participants performed an auditory primed lexical decision task wheretarget words (e.g., “push”) and pseudowords had to be discriminated, primed by overlapping iconic gestures that could be semantically related(e.g., moving both hands forward) or not with the words. Experiment 2 wassimilar but with both gestures and words presented visually. Thegrammatical category of the words was also manipulated: they were nounsand verbs. It was found that words related to gestures were recognized fasterand with fewer errors than the unrelated ones in both experiments andsimilarly for both types of words.
