K1 infrared imaging K1 engineering education K1 electrical fault detection K1 predictive maintenance K1 educational technology AB Infrared thermography is one of the main techniquesof predictive maintenance. It consists of measurements oftemperature at a distance and analysis of thermograms.Thermography is widely used in the electrical sector because mostelectrical equipment presents thermal disturbances before afailure. Currently, there is difficulty in teaching and learningthermographic inspection because practical lessons are usuallyperformed in no suitable teaching equipment. The using actualelectrical installations for thermography practical class is notrecommended due to the need for the insertion of failures, whichis risky for people’s safety and can cause arcing and interruptionof electricity supply. Thus, in this paper, a prototype wasdeveloped for use as a didactic resource for thermography. Forthis, a set of switchgear was designed and built that simulatedcommon electrical failures: open circuit, poor contact, undersizingof conductors, and interruption of parallel conductors. Theassembled didactic switchgear was used in pilot classes withtechnical and upper-level students from the electricity area whohad already taken the class through a real electrical switchgear. All students considered the didactic switchgear better than the realone, with a 100% satisfaction index. From the proposedswitchgear and the pilot classes, a tutorial for practical classes anda teaching manual were developed. It was concluded that thedidact resource proposed, classes with the proposed set ofswitchgear, is better than classes in actual facilities, consideringthe control of teaching resources and the operational safety, as wellas people’s safety.
