This proposal has been co-created with the contributions of the authors, based on the cases of Chile and the Canary Islands, within the framework of an international cooperation program for research funded by public and private institutions. Below are the lessons learned based on the ideas, observations and reflections collected during the processes of identification, diagnosis and design policy proposals for both territories under a systemic and co-creation approach. T he methodology has been applied to the Canarian context by conducting a workshop with the participation of actors working within the design innovation ecosystem including research groups and universities, industry organisations, strategic consultants, government institutions and designers. The result has been the formulation of four research and innovation projects driven by design and aligned with two strategic priorities — smart leadership in tourism, and green growth and sustainability — of the research and development and innovation policies of the Canary Islands government.
