RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Le jardin de la Rose T2 The Rose's garden A1 Braet, Herman K1 enluminure K1 clĂ´ture K1 artifice K1 fontaine AB The background scenery in the first part of Le Roman de la Rose is that of Deduit's garden. The descriptive details provided by the poet are retrieved, modified and developed by the illuminators. These arch-readers focus on three specific elements, principally on the different kinds of enclosures which inscribe this domain within the limits of the hortus conclusus tradition. The vegetation around the eponymous rose carries the signs of human agency on nature. The fountain itself is presented under different forms, ranging from that of the simple reflecting surface to that of monumentality. Finally, this article analyses two pictures. One derives from the Garden of Eden, and the other one, nothwithstanding the presence of l'Amant, is girdled within the initial vision of a "pleasant and delightful place".
