AB The study of ceria based materials was the main objective of this research, especiallywith regard to their electrochemical and catalytic characterization in order to evaluatetheir potential application in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and/or catalysis.To this end, the effect of adding a cation Gd3+ to the ceria crystalline structure wasanalyzed. The adding of the cation yields the solid solution Ce1-xGdxO2-d (x = 0, 0.01,0.05, 0.1, 0.2). The aliovalent cations with an oxidation state lower than that of Ce4+generate oxygen vacancies and, as a consequence, an increase in the concentration ofionic charge “carriers”.
