Illuminations of the past A1 Fernández Cardo, José María K1 Marcel Proust K1 Chrétien de Troyes K1 Jean Foucquet K1 John Ruskin K1 memoria K1 catedral gótica K1 libro de horas K1 metáfora AB This article is meant to be an intertextualrevision and interpretation of different aspects which relate Marcel Proust’s workto Chrétien de Troyes’: gothic cathedrals (Amiens and Rouen), the works of late medievalpainters, and a representation of memory as documented on medieval rhetoric. The connectionis established through John Ruskin, Marcel Proust’s «spiritual» father in his questfor a writing style, which he eventually found in In Search of Lost Time. It is precisely in thislast volume that the narrator establishes a particularly suggestive relation with Foucquet’sbook of hours, a work with illustrations whose reference is the anticipation of metaphortheory in the very narrative text of the last volume, Time Regained.
