The article examines the construction of a professionalidentity under conditions of extended precarious work. How do university graduates handlethe tensions between their professional an personal expectations, an the reality of a decliningand progressively insecure labour market? The question is approached by presenting asingle-case study of a youth care worker, whose attempts to find employment in her field anforge a professional identity are frustrated by the 2008. Methodologically, the research isbased on an in-depth interview conducted an analyzed using Wengraf an Chamberlayne’sBiographical Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) The Method is a psychosocial approachto biography focused on narrative as a source of evidence for the understanding ofsubjectivity. The analysis reveals that, despite the interviewee’s downward trajectory and theprecariousness of her present employment, the stable core of her self is constructed arounda story that highlights her worth, effort, and competence.
