It is anemerging zoonosis, considered one of the most common food andwaterborne diseases all over the world. Fourteen named species have beenreported in humans, and twelve of them, at least, are shared between humansand animals. The most usual species that cause cryptosporidiosis in humansare Cryptosporidium hominis and Cryptosporidium parvum, and cattle aregenerally related with zoonotic cases in humans; however, rodents areincreasing their transmission rate. The oocyst, the infective parasite stage, isresistant to conventional purification treatments. In immunocompetent hosts, the parasite produces acute and self-limiting diarrhea; however, inimmunocompromised or immunosuppressed individuals and young children,it may progress to a chronic and life-threatening disease, resulting inmultisystem involvement and mortality. The diagnosis is usually made bydetecting oocysts in stool samples, while identification is realized combiningmorphological and molecular techniques. There is no drug able tocompletely remove Cryptosporidium from the host; although supportivetreatments are used in animals and humans, prevention methods are the mostprotective against Cryptosporidium. As a small practical contribution, with this work we confirm the presence of Cryptosporidium sp in peridomesticanimals of the Canary Islands.
