Proposing innovative techniques and methodologies in science education in general
and geology in particular in a highly recommended idea nowadays due, among many
reasons, to the large number of available tools we have and the low motivation in
many cases at the time of facing these studies.
Methodologies can be combined to make activities more entertaining and
suggestive, as long as it is made in a consistent way and with a sense. In this
project, I propose an activity where new technologies are combined with a classical
story in order to create a common thread towards the teaching of geology.
The film "The man who would be King" (based on Rudyard Kipling's novel of the
same name), gives us a perfect excuse to "travel" to Asia to know the formation of
the Himalayas, the glaciers of the Hindu Kush or the erosive formations of the north
of Afghanistan. This trip, usuarlly very complicated to do, Google Earth allows us to
do it. During the activity (focused for 3rd of ESO), we will have two sessions, one to make
the trip, see the different fragments of the film and give the necessary explanations
in between; and another for sharing in common.
