Nombrar el agua en la Edad Media. Del preciado líquido al líquido mortal

Abstract

«Naming water in the Middle Ages. From the cherished liquid to the mortal liquid». In this work we attempt to grasp the importance of naming water in medieval Castilian, in order to understand both its linguistic effects on the history of this language as well as the internal development of this field. We shall be using as sources some treatises from the Spanish Golden Age as well as some descriptions which emerged in the wake of the medieval encyclopedic movement. Throughout the thorough search of notary, juridical and literary texts, we shall analyze the linguistic diversity that characterizes this element, departing from the bonds between the Latin and the Castilian denominations, and looking as well at the Arabic influence, according to the social-historical conditions the different territories in the Iberian peninsula underwent.

En este trabajo nos acercaremos a las implicaciones lingüísticas de nombrar el agua en el seno del castellano medieval, tanto en lo que afecta a la historia externa del idioma como a su evolución interna. Para ello, iniciaremos un recorrido que parte de la importancia de este elemento para algunos tratadistas de los Siglos de Oro, así como en determinadas descripciones de la Península Ibérica emanadas desde el enciclopedismo medieval. A través de la documentación notarial y de textos jurídicos y literarios, observaremos las diversas maneras de denominar las variadas manifestaciones de este elemento, partiendo del vínculo que se establece entre latín y castellano y otras lenguas, como el árabe, aunque para tal efecto se haya de conocer los avatares histórico-sociales que vivieron los diversos territorios que conformaron la antiquísima Iberia.
