Criticando al crítico: Poe y sus notas a Stephens

Abstract

En este breve artículo, comentamos los aspectos más disonantes en una crítica literaria por parte de Edgar Allan Poe, acerca de la obra de su compatriota John Lloyd Stephens, que había escrito dos volúmenes relatando sus descubrimientos en sus viajes. Hacemos una síntesis de la obra crítica de Poe, un apunte biográfico sobre el viajero, y la revisión de las secciones cubiertas por Poe, atendiendo a la fuente original para dilucidar qué pudo llevar a Poe a ignorar los contenidos de tres cuartas partes del libro. Este trabajo también revela los procesos argumentativos que llevan a Poe a cometer un error de coherencia, que él mismo corrige desdiciéndose y cambiando de rumbo. Las indagaciones acerca de lo real y lo fantástico de ciertas profecías bíblicas son el principal objeto de Poe.

This paper is a review of one of the critical writings that Edgar Allan Poe published. The chosen piece is a review of a travel book in two volumes by John Lloyd Stephens. We shall try to demonstrate how Poe clearly disregarded most of its content, failing into incoherence, and he focused his critical comments on a particular topic, namely, the actual fulfillment of biblical prophecies. Throughout our argumentation, we shall carry out a contrastive analysis of the original source and the review by Poe itself. In the conclusion, we will hypothesize that, since at a later stage in the composition of the review Poe seems to abandon a position that he had vigorously defended, it is highly probable that he was forced to deliver the critical piece without having corrected it properly himself.
