La fundamentación del principio de respeto a la autonomía en bioética

Abstract

Este artículo esboza una crítica del enfoque estándar en bioética en lo que respecta a la definición, justificación y rol del principio de respeto por la autonomía (PRA). Para ello, se señalan algunos problemas de circularidad y se apuntan tres dimensiones de la autonomía de la paciente (decisional, funcional e informativa), así como la necesidad de distinguir la calificación de un acto como autónomo y su bondad moral considerados todos los factores relevantes. Se concluye que el PRA no puede considerarse un principio más, sino todo un cambio de perspectiva sobre los demás principios tradicionales en bioética.

This paper attempts a critique of the mainstream approach in bioethics concerning the definition, justification, and role of the principle of respect for autonomy (PRA). Some problems of circularity in the definition are described, as well as three main dimensions in patient autonomy (decisional, functional, and informative) and the need of distinguishing between the judgment about an act as autonomous and the judgment about its moral goodness all things considered. It is concluded that the PRA cannot be conceived of as just another principle; it is rather a whole change of perspective over the other traditional principles in bioethics.
