Abstract

La historia del Imperio romano ha fascinado a los historiadores e intelectuales europeos desde tiempos muy remotos, y su caída desde luego no es una excepción. El presente trabajo pretende analizar a Edward Gibbon y su The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire como forma de aproximación al estudio del concepto de “declive” presente, de forma casi universal hasta hace unos años, en toda la historiografía del Bajo Imperio. Se defenderá que dicho concepto tiene origen precisamente en esta obra, por lo que el estudio de la misma permitirá un mejor entendimiento de éste, aunque únicamente se trate en este trabajo el concepto de declive tal y como Gibbon lo entendió y conceptualizó. De esta forma, este trabajo explicará tanto este concepto, como el origen y las influencias específicos que tiene, proporcionando un contexto temporal y cultural que facilite su completa comprensión.

The history of the Roman Empire has been fascinating for European historians and scholars ever since very early times, and its fall is surely not an exception. The objective of this paper is to approximate the study of the concept of “decline”, almost universally present up to a few years ago in the Late Empire historiography, by the analysis of Edward Gibbon and his The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. It will be defended the origin of this concept in this work and, even if this paper will only deal with the gibbonian concept of “decline” and not others, the study of the Decline and Fall should help to understand the concept altogether. Thereby, in order to properly understand the concept, a temporal and cultural context will also be provided in this essay that explains its specific origins and influences.
