In her unfinished tetralogy launched in 1978 with the publication of The Virgin in the Garden, A.S. Byatt chronicles the story of an intellectually ambitious young woman in the years when the domestic role for women was hegemonic. The historical background spans the 1953 coronation of Elizabeth II to the first Wilson government, and the narrative shifts from the comparative directness of the first novel in the sequence to the far-reaching intertextual play in Babel Tower. Byatt’s distinctive feature remains her presentation of gender issues together with a wide-ranging interest in the problems of representation in literature and painting, new theories of language, developments in the study of DNA, and the ways in which cultural change impinges on the individual.
