Abstract

The fight for regional hegemony between the United States and China is one of the most controversial current issues in international studies. Basically, it reproduces the historical confrontation between an emerging power and another that enjoys a long predominance in the international system. The scenarios that can configure this conflict oscillate between the outbreak of a limited war and a continuous competition in which cooperation will not be absent as well. China's rise may or may not be peaceful, but it is not indifferent to competition among the world's great powers. Different approaches and theoretical perspectives in the discipline of International Relations have increasingly dealt with this matter.

La pugna por la hegemonía regional entre Estados Unidos y China es uno de los temas actuales más controvertidos en los estudios internacionales. Básicamente, reproduce el histórico enfrentamiento entre una potencia emergente y otra que goza de un largo predominio en el sistema internacional. Los escenarios que puede configurar este conflicto oscilan entre el estallido de una guerra limitada y una continua competición en la que no estará ausente también la cooperación. El ascenso de China podrá ser pacífico o no, pero no es indiferente a la competición entre las grandes potencias mundiales. Diferentes aproximaciones y perspectivas teóricas en la disciplina de las Relaciones Internacionales vienen ocupándose de manera creciente de este asunto.
