2020Abstract
Nowadays, sports supplements are very popular and are used by both professional athletes
and individuals who exercise in a playful or recreational way.
The objective of this proyect is to know the scientific evidence that supports the benefits
of sports supplements and, on the other hand, to analyze their sale and degree of
satisfaction by consumers through the development of a survey carried out in two stores
Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In these surveys, data were obtained from 78 customers and the most consumed sports
supplements were: Whey protein (34.5%), Creatine (18.5%), BCAAs ("Branched-Chain
Amino Acids") (8.6%) and Glutamine (7.4%), being Creatine the most valued.
Regarding the scientific evidence available on its effectiveness, only Whey Protein and
Creatine presented strong scientific evidence as an ergogenic aid for resistance training
and aerobic exercise, respectively. On the other hand, it is suggested that BCAAs and
Glutamine could also be used to improve sports performance as a consequence of
decreased central fatigue and muscle damage. However, current studies are contradictory
and further studies on this are still needed.
