Executive functions are those that regulate behaviour and thought, allow
adaptation to the environment and are necessary for the achievement of objectives.
Likewise, the executive function is divided into different processes, including cognitive
flexibility, which allows us to adapt to changes in the environment. It is currently known
that this type of function is found in the frontal cortex (specifically in the prefrontal
cortex). With the present research we want to check if this function is related and
involved in other areas or if it is a totally exclusive function of the frontal one. By means
of magnetic resonance images we check if there are structures that are related to a
higher or lower level of cognitive flexibility and therefore which areas are involved. We
find that this function is not exclusive to the frontal cortex and that there are a multitude
of subcortical and cortical areas involved.
