Introduction: Childhood obesity is one of the main public health problems of the 21st century.
Its main cause is the imbalance between caloric intake and energy consumption. In addition,
sociodemographic factors and lifestyles during growth can affect the disease development.
Obesity can influence child's mental health and can lead into increased depression, anxiety,
and self-image disorders. Obese children often have low self-esteem and guilt feelings.
Objectives: to study the relationship between self-esteem, guilt feelings, and overweight in
children between 7 and 12 years old.
Methology:
Design: a cross-sectional study.
Measurement instruments: self-esteem will be assessed with a multiple choice quiz (Collins'
Seven Figures) and a fill-in worksheet (My Values) with long answers expected. To assess guilt
feelings the Guilt due to Obesity or Overweight Scale in Children and Adolescents (GOOSCA),
will be used. Therefore, weight and height will be measured and body mass index will be
calculated for all children, which will allow classifying children into different weight,
overweight, and obese boxes.
Results: On one hand, we have carried out a verification study in 31 children, 12 who were
overweight and 6 were obese, verifying that in the Collins test all children with overweight and
obesity identified themselves with the slimmest figure and the majority stated that they would
like to be slimmer. On the other hand, we have figured that guilt feelings assessed on the
GOOSCA scale occur in obese children, but not in those who are overweight.
Conclusions: we have verified that there were no difficulties in their development and,
therefore, the study will be able to be carried out in children of this group age. This will allow
the project to make a research on a larger group and to be able to reach decisive results
