Interpersonal skills are fundamental in a profession such as nursing, however, factors
such as working conditions or the work environment can trigger the professional to
experience Burnout Syndrome, where care is a high cost, resulting in serious
consequences for the professional due to an unsatisfactory working environment.
Recently, and in relation to this psychological state that has been the subject of different
studies, a new term called Compassionate Fatigue has been coined. Defined as that set
of negative internal experiences of the professional, originated by a high level of
emotional exhaustion.
This bibliographic review of narrative descriptive character has as general objective to
analyze in the main databases of Health Sciences the scientific production of the last
nine years that relate the Compassionate Fatigue and the Burnout Syndrome in
professionals nursing.
A total of 12 studies have been included, mostly of a cross-sectional descriptive design,
which shows that both Compassionate Fatigue and Burnout represent a negative
response, multidimensional in nature, with consequences both for the physical and
psychological health of the professional and for patients and health organizations and
that both phenomena are the result of the failure of strategies that professionals have to
face the numerous demands and demands of their daily work so it is vital to continue
researching in depth both constructs and their relationships.
