Los Llanos de Aridane: el plátano como factor de crecimiento urbano

Abstract

Situada al Oeste de La Palma, en el valle del que toma su nombre, nos encontramos la aglomeración urbana más grande de la isla, la Ciudad de Los Llanos de Aridane. La ciudad nacida para hacer compañía a un templo católico, hoy se ha convertido en el principal centro económico de la isla, en detrimento de la capital insular, Santa Cruz de La Palma. Este centro urbano, nace con una trama previamente diseñada, al contrario de lo que ocurrió en las otras dos localidades existentes por el momento, Santa Cruz de La Palma y Tazacorte, que experimentaron un crecimiento urbanístico desordenado. Estudiar estas características urbanas únicas en La Palma, se hace necesario para entender el proceso urbanizador actual, el cual ha traído consigo verdaderos atentados contra el patrimonio y la agricultura. Tenemos que entender todo este proceso de evolución, saber de dónde viene y por qué, esto es importante para la mejora del territorio, para poder construir una ciudad sostenible, sin que pierda su identidad.

Located to the West of La Palma, in the valley which takes its name, we find the largest urban agglomeration of the island, the City of Los Llanos de Aridane. The city was born to keep catholic temple company, today has become the main economic center of the island, to the detriment of the island's capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma. This city center was born with a previously designed urban network, unlike what happened in the other two existing locations in this moment, Santa Cruz de La Palma and Tazacorte, who experienced a disordered urban growth. Studying these unique urban characteristics in La Palma, it is necessary to understand the current urbanization process, which has brought real attacks against heritage and farming. We have to understand this process of evolution, we have to know where it comes from and why this is important for the upgrade of territory, so we can be able to build a sustainable city, without losing it identity.
