This paper presents a general discussion of the possibilities of a discipline
that can study texts scientifically. The notions of text and context, together
with other concepts, such as strategies, stereotypes, etc. are examined
according to different perspectives and proposals put forward by several
linguists; all this leads to the conclusion that strategies and tactics that help in
the construction of texts do not really constitute a science, but an art.
