This paper is a tentative valuation of Ian McEwan's
production in the context of social and political changes in
contemporary Britain since 1975. Particular attention is given to
his latest novel, The Child in Time (1987), as this work shows
—through its metaphorical and severe critique of 'Thatcherism'—
a remarkable shift in the writer's commitment to society.
