Libros y escritura en la pintura de Murillo

Abstract

Este artículo aborda el mundo del libro en la obra pictórica de Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. En primer lugar, se centra en estudiar la representación formal de los libros presentes en las pinturas del artista sevillano, analizando su encuadernación, cierres, formato, cortes, o inscripciones, entre otros aspectos. En segundo lugar, se examinan todos los elementos presentes en estas pinturas de los que podemos obtener información relativa a la forma de leer o de escribir propia del siglo xvii. Se pretende mostrar cómo las obras pictóricas nos ofrecen información sobre múltiples aspectos propios del mundo librario y de la cultura escrita, pudiendo ir siempre más allá de lo que se ve a simple vista.

This article addresses the world of books in the pictorial works of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Firstly, it focuses on studying the formal representation of books depicted in the paintings of the Sevillian artist, analyzing their binding, closures, format, cuts, inscriptions, and other relevant aspects. Secondly, it examines all the elements present in these paintings from which we can obtain information related to the reading and writing practices characteristic of the 17th century. The aim is to demonstrate how pictorial works offer us insights into various aspects of books and written culture, often going beyond what meets the eye.
