La configuración literaria de los líderes castellanos e indígenas en las crónicas de conquista canaria y novohispana

Abstract

Las crónicas de conquista son textos que nos ayudan a conocer los hechos ocurridos du- rante el periodo expansionista de la Corona española; sin embargo, estas no son del todo objetivas y responden también a criterios políticos y literarios. Desde esta óptica, estudiar a los protagonistas de dichas crónicas permite dar luz sobre cómo se construyeron la historia y la narrativa de las empresas bélicas de conquista y qué papel tuvieron las crónicas en la construcción del imaginario alrededor de las figuras principales de líderes conquistadores e indígenas y en qué puntos coinciden las caracterizaciones de estos en las crónicas canarias y las novohispanas; pues, a pesar de haber ocurrido en territorios diferentes, forman parte de un mismo continuum histórico y guardan muchas similitudes en la forma de narrar lo sucedido.

The chronicles of conquests are documents that serve as a tool to understand the series of events that took place during the expansionist period of the Spanish Crown; nevertheless, they are not entirely objective since they also follow different political and literary crite- ria. From this perspective, the study of the main characters of the chronicles allows us to comprehend how the history and the narrative of the wars for conquest were built and the place the literary texts took in the construction of the imagery surrounding the principal figures of the conquerors and indigenous leaders and in what aspects their characterization in the chronicles written in the Canary Islands and in New Spain coincide; since they are part of the same historical continuum and present many similarities in the narrative style, even though they were written in different territories.
