En estas últimas décadas, es normal ver construcciones de barcos
inmensos, de grandes calados y capacidad de carga, los cuales son
imposibles ver operar en puertos de una profundidad menor de diez
metros. Por ende, se crearon y actualmente se utilizan las plataformas off shore, principalmente para operaciones de buques de gran tonelaje en puertos donde el calado o el puerto en sí es inferior a lo que albergan estos barcos de gran tonelaje.
