Overtourism en Lanzarote: ¿realidad o inexistencia?

Abstract

Overtourism is a relatively recent phenomenon with strong impacts on tourist destinations. When the destinations are island destinations, such as the island of Lanzarote, these impacts can be crucial not only for tourism activity but also for the island's economy. For this reason, this work aims to confirm the results that the Island Council of Lanzarote, the highest governing body of the island, has published in the report "Study on the Tourist Carrying Capacity in Lanzarote''. Based on the analysis of the evolution of variables such as tourist arrivals, waste emissions and vehicle fleet over the last 11 years, the results obtained lead to the conclusion that there is clear evidence of overtourism in Lanzarote.

El overtourism es un fenómeno relativamente reciente y con fuertes impactos sobre los destinos turísticos. Cuando los destinos son insulares, como la isla de Lanzarote, estos impactos pueden ser cruciales no solo para la actividad turística sino también para la economía insular. Por ello, en este trabajo se pretende confirmar los resultados que el Cabildo Insular de Lanzarote, máximo órgano de gobernanza de la isla, ha hecho públicos mediante el informe Estudio sobre la Capacidad de Carga Turística en Lanzarote. A partir del análisis de la evolución de variables como la llegada de turistas, la emisión de residuos o el parque de vehículos durante los últimos 11 años, los resultados obtenidos permiten concluir que existe una evidencia clara de overtourism en Lanzarote.
