Crear memoria y utilizarla judicial y políticamente. Entre el imaginario hidalgo y la realidad del dominio señorial en la cornisa cantábrica: la Puebla de Escalante (Cantabria) al final de la Edad Media

Abstract

This article analyses the creation of memory by the people of the town of Escalante, modern Cantabria, and the way it was employed in judicial and political arenas as a means of ending the domination of the village by various members of the Guevara lineage from the late 14th century. By examining judicial documents generated during the lawsuits that the villagers fought against their seigneurs throughout the 15th century, I shall illustrate how memories were activated and how they were used in those, and later, legal processes. In order to achieve this, I shall examine the context within which the forensic enquiries were undertaken. Secondly, I shall follow the course of the judicial dispute and define how memory was created and presented in favour of the villagers’ positions. Finally, I shall investigate the differences between the imaginary constructed during interrogations on the basis of this recreated memory, and the reality of the continued aristocratic domination over the town.

Estas páginas abordan un estudio de caso sobre la creación de memoria y su utilización judicial y política por los vecinos de villa de Escalante, en la actual Cantabria, con un único objetivo: desembarazarse del yugo señorial que distintos miembros del linaje de Guevara ejercieron sobre la Puebla desde finales del siglo xiv. Emplearé documentación judicial asociada a los pleitos que mantuvieron con sus señores durante el siglo xv que ofrecen información sobre cómo se activan los recuerdos y cómo los utilizaron contra sus señores en esa y en posteriores iniciativas judiciales. Para alcanzar ese objetivo analizaré, en primer lugar, el contexto en el que se producen las pesquisas judiciales. En segundo lugar, atenderé al desarrollo del pleito y a cómo se crea memoria para utilizarla judicial y políticamente en defensa de los intereses de los vecinos. Finalmente, observaré las diferencias entre el imaginario construido sobre la memoria recreada por los testigos durante los interrogatorios y la realidad del continuado dominio señorial sobre la villa.
