AB The desert, the sky and the sea are three open spaces (mayd×n) that share navigation strategies. First, we explore the relationship of the Arabs of the pre-Islamic and early Islamic eraswith the sea, and then describe some of the advances in astronomy made during the AbbasidCaliphate in Baghdad, which had an important bearing on later developments in the nautical field.
