Guidelines from three case studies A1 Menichinelli, Massimo A1 Profeta, Giovanni A1 Cangiano, Serena K1 Open community K1 Digital platforms K1 Data visualisation AB One of the most interesting and promising phenomena of the lastyears is the emergence of social innovation initiatives, a loose and world-widemovement of people, projects and organisations that are addressing socialchallenges in fields like healthcare, education, employment, democraticparticipation, migration and the environment. We especially consider to bevery promising those initiatives that are based around communities thatadopts digital platforms, develop digital solutions and are open in theirprocesses and results. The importance of online open communities indeveloping and scaling social innovations could then lead to an improved andbroader understanding of the dynamics of social innovations and onlineplatforms. The article aims at improving the knowledge about the use ofgraphical visualisations for understanding open communities, which datasources and formats are available and which ones are missing for this task, which are the main design requirements and strategies for this task, and whichare the common elements in existing ongoing experiences in visualising opencommunities.
