T1 Crossing the Boundaries: Aphra Behn and John Wilkins Popularizing the "New Science"

AB In seventeenth-century England various people tried to eliminate the boundaries betweenelitist science and popular opinions. Among them were John Wilkins, one of the foundersof the Royal Society, and Aphra Behn, the first professional woman writer in this country.This article focuses on three main points: the conception of horizontal and vertical culturaltransfers (Wilkins and Behn as promoters of the “new science,” language as an instrumentof cultural transfer); Wilkins’s and Behn’s activities in separating science and religion; thegrowing interest to sciences among English people of both sexes in the 1690s and in thebeginning of the eighteenth century.
