Among them were John Wilkins, one of the foundersof the Royal Society, and Aphra Behn, the first professional woman writer in this country.This article focuses on three main points: the conception of horizontal and vertical culturaltransfers (Wilkins and Behn as promoters of the “new science,” language as an instrumentof cultural transfer); Wilkins’s and Behn’s activities in separating science and religion; thegrowing interest to sciences among English people of both sexes in the 1690s and in thebeginning of the eighteenth century.
