AB The scenic vigour displayed by sixteenth century Portuguese drama stems mainly from aspecific set of outstanding characters that, endowed with caricaturesque traits, become apart of the social scenery. As such, they were identified, both by the dramatists and theaudiences, as representative of certain groups, evolving thus into specific types. Amongthem, one of the most relevant figures are those of the «regateiras» or wandering femalesellers. The author of this article focuses her attention on this itinerant figure and its importancein sixteenth century Portuguese society as reflected in diverse plays belonging to theVincentine school.
