AB The teaching of pronunciation is a fundamental and yet, in practice, often aneglected aspect in English classrooms in Spain. An intelligible pronunciation is vital fororal communication, both privately and professionally. Hence, it is an integral componentof language skills as it greatly affects the fluency of communication. Although orallanguage skills are generally considered important, pronunciation is often overshadowedby other aspects of the language in the classrooms thus, playing a secondary role inlanguage teaching. The teaching of pronunciation is influenced by several factorsincluding teachers and their need to follow a strict curriculum in which they have to focuslargely on the four main language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), nothaving enough material available in textbooks to teach pronunciation and teachers feelingthat they do not have enough knowledge to teach pronunciation or the time needed to planit. The aim of this study is to examine the attention that is given to pronunciation in a realeducational context. To this end, I have analyzed the responses to a questionnaireadministered to an English teacher, the pronunciation exercises included in the textbookused in class and the main pronunciation difficulties of a group of students. I have alsosought to design a series of activities that could help these students overcome theperceived difficulties. As an ultimate goal, this study aims to highlight the importance ofpronunciation in Spanish schools by encouraging teachers to integrate pronunciation intheir classes through several meaningful activities with the objective to enhance students’communicative competence.
