Polysiphonia opaca y P. tripinnata (Rhodophyta, Rhodomelaceae) A1 Afonso Carrillo, Julio A1 Rojas González, Berta A2 BotánicaEcología y Fisiología Vegetal A2 Botánica Marina AB This contribution is the first of a series in which we review thePolysiphonia of the Canary Islands, and in this one the vegetative andreproductive morphology and the distribution of Polysiphonia opaca andPolysiphonia tripinnata in the Canary Islands are examined. Severalmorphological features that are important for the distinction of Polysiphoniaspecies occur in both species (presence of prostrate axes, absence of cortication, young branches arising in the axil of the trichoblasts, and septate rhizoids), butthey can be identified with certainty on the basis of the number of pericentralcells: 22-24 in P. opaca, 16-19 in P. tripinnata. The specimens from the CanaryIslands are in agreement with previous descriptions of these species, but theyexhibit reduced dimensions. Both species seem to be relatively rare elementsof the benthic marine mesoflora of the Canary Islands, and probably, they havea more wide distribution in the Canarian coasts. Small number of identificationscan be related to the reduced size of the habit of these species.
