RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Entonación y ambigüedad. Determinante vs. intensificador adverbial A1 Gutiérrez Díez, Francisco AB In this article we deal with the intonational exponence of a closedgrammatical system of English. The two terms of the system containidentical lexical strings whose syntactic description is assigned solelyby the intonational subsystem known as tonicity. The alternative placementof the intonational nucleus on one word or another of the stringcauses the nucleus-bearing word to be categorised as either a quantifieror an adverbial intensifier. Mapping the two English sentences onto theSpanish and Catalan equivalents, we find that intonation has no longera role, and the contrasting structural descriptions of the sentences obtainedis determined by the different word order of the strings. We finishwith a note on the pedagogical implications stemming fron our analysisas regards the teaching of English intonation to both Spanish andCatalan students.
