AB This article studies the different types of relative clauses and the latestgenerative analyses of them, to conclude that only one distinction isrelevant: that between restrictive and non-restrictive clauses. The differencesbetween them may in turn be reduced to subordinate vs independent naturein the D-structure, an analysis which leads to a better understanding oftheir syntactic and semantic behaviour, although it poses importanttheoretical problems yet to be solved.
