Although we have not preserved the pieces, the documentation thathas come down to us –chronicles, testamentary, auction, inventories, and accounts– allowsus to know not only the cost of these, but also their manufacture and materiality. On someoccasions, the jewels’ design gives us information about the superstitions and devotions ofeither the queen or their previous owners. On other occasions, these pieces seem to havebeen conceived as part of the royal ceremonial and scenery, echoing metaphorical resourcespresent in the literature of the time, based on royal animal mimicry. However, this doesnot mean that all the animal motifs that decorated the queen’s jewels were designed forpropaganda or speculative purposes. Some of these would have been simply ornamentaland luxurious pieces, for personal decoration, whose symbolic charge would reside in theirown sumptuousness. PB Servicio de Publicaciones.
