Phytotherapy has turned out to be a great ally for the treatment of variousmild pathologies for centuries. Among these, insomnia and anxiety stand out, which aretwo current pathologies in the population of the Canary Islands. For its treatment, overthe-counter medicinal supplements are used, so its use can be wrong, ineffective or evenharmful. This study analyzes the consumption of ten drugs indicated for thesepathologies.Objectives. To study the social-demographic profile of consumer patients and verifywhich are the most consumed medicinal plants for the treatment of anxiety and/orinsomnia.Methodology. An observational and transversal study was made on the patients througha survey. Those patients who in any given moment showed anxiety or insomniasymptoms and have used medicinal plants to ease said pathology, were the onesquestioned in the survey.Results and discussion. The sample is formed by 392 people, of whom approximately77% have suffered from a sleep and/or anxiety disorder at some point, and more than thehalf state that they have used supplements of this type in their daily lives.Conclusion. Disorders associated with sleep and nervousness are highly prevalent in theCanary Islands’ population. The most consumed medicinal plant is valerian, althoughmelatonin is usually chosen as the first therapeutic option. The number of current usersstands at 20.7% of which ,13.5% are chronic users.
