The prisiónenvironment encourages conflicts between prisioners, resorting to the disciplinaryregime of the center or even to individual confrontations to solve them. Therefore, thisstudy analyzes the coexistence and conflicts generated among inmates in order topropose penitentiary mediation as a peaceful way of resolving conflicts. To this end, the discourse of 32 inmates of the Mercedes Pinto Social Insertion Centerlocated in Tenerife has been analyzed, as well as the implementation of an instrumentthat measures the way of conflict resolution. The research data revealed the peculiarities of the coexistence to which the inmates areexposed, being this much more tense and contentious than in the exterior, appeasingwith the progression of degree. However, conflicts sometimes remain dormant betweenthem and may erupt later. It is necessary to promote mediation within penitentiary centers to improve coexistenceand contribute to conflict resolution in a more effective way, giving people the skills tobe able to cope with similar situations once the sentence ends.
