The defining characteristic of mental states is intentionality. However,
there are different ways to defend the idea that intentionality is the mark of the mental. In
this paper, two of such developments (namely, the representationalist thesis and the
intentionalist thesis) are considered and some reasons for the phenomenological superiority
of intentionalism and against representationalism are given.
