enriquecimiento curricular a estos/as estudiantes.
Education has become a very important role in people's lives. Schools are a meeting
place where everybody learns how to grow and live in society. This is why the
Education System must offer equal opportunities and support the full and free
development of people, taking into account their needs, interests and desires. In the
Canary Islands, school children with High Intellectual Abilities are considered pupils
with Specific Educational Support Needs (SEN). This is why the Canary Government
offers curricular enrichment plans for them.
However, there are some studies that question the suitability of the identification
process of students with High Intellectual Abilities and the adequacy of the measures
taken for the adaptation and care of these children at school. Taking into account the
concerns raised by these studies, the aim of this project is to analyse the reality in the
Canary Islands, that is, to check whether there are significant difficulties in identifying
pupils with High Intellectual Abilities and whether the educational measures are
appropriate for their integration in schools on the islands. For this purpose, two entities
that are very close to children with High Intellectual Abilities have collaborated:
primary school teachers and families with children with High Intellectual Abilities.
In order to investigate this reality in the schools of the Canary Islands, a mixed
methodology research (quantitative and qualitative methodology) has been designed.
The main focus of this research has been carried out through two ad hoc questionnaires
answered by families with children with High Intellectual Abilities and school teachers
in the Canary Islands (private and public schools). For the analysis of the results of
these questionnaires, the descriptive analysis, the inferential analysis and the analysis of
qualitative data supported by "SoftwareRStudio" and the software "Alceste" were used.
The conclusions drawn from this study, after analysing the results, are summarised as
follows: teachers do not have an adequate training in relation to pupils with High
Intellectual Abilities, which means that a large part of these pupils remain unidentified
and their cognitive, social and emotional needs are left unfulfilled. This prevents the full
personal development that should be provided by any educational system.
