The current project, entitled ‘The European Language Portfolio (ELP), an integrative tool
of didactic and pedagogical goals’, responds to the lack of application of ELP in the
educational Spanish context, more specifically inside the classrooms of public and private
centres of the Canary Islands.
In the next pages, we will analyse briefly the ELP and some of the experimentations
implemented in Spain since its institution in 2003. It will be explained from a linguistic
and pedagogical point of view describing its origins, each part as well as its advantages
in the language teaching on the basis of certain common goals as teachers. In addition,
we will revise the results of a questionnaire given to foreign language teachers in
Secondary Education and Bachillerato with the purpose of seeing their knowledge about
ELP, its goals and to what extent they apply this tool with their students. Finally, a
proposal for improvement will be included. This will be based on a complementary
training initiative for teachers divided into phases with the main aim of promoting the use
of ELP in language teaching, but also studying the strategies, resources and tools that will
be useful to improve our work experience as L2 teachers in the achievement of common
goals adapted to the present reality in the context of language teaching in the Canary
Islands.
