Fealdad y belleza en las representaciones del villano en el cine mudo europeo y estadounidense

Abstract

Este artículo propone un breve repaso antológico por las principales representaciones del villano en las películas silentes europeas y estadounidenses a partir de 1910, abarcando sus personificaciones, escenas y claves más características, bajo las nociones estéticas de belleza y fealdad. El texto aborda el mal desde distintas vertientes como elemento edificador de imágenes antagonistas, diferenciando cuando procede de representaciones con base real, o totalmente de ficción, teratológicas o no teratológicas, amén de abundar en los aspectos de la caracterización y la construcción estética del malvado, con algunos apuntes sobre la influencia posterior de personajes concretos. El rostro como espejo frontal u opaco del mal, más un repaso por los villanos que llevaron nombre de mujer en esta etapa, hallan, por último, un espacio propio a lo largo de la compilación.

This paper proposes a brief anthological review of the main representations of the villain in European and American silent films, from 1910, covering their most characteristic faces, scenes and keys, under the aesthetic notions of beauty and ugliness. The text addresses evil from different perspectives as a construction element of antagonistic images, differentiating when it proceeds between representations based on reality, or totally fictional, teratological or non-teratological, in addition to abounding in the aspects of the characterization and aesthetic construction of the evil one, with some notes on the subsequent influence of spe- cific characters. The face as a frontal or opaque mirror of evil, plus a review of the female villains at this stage, finally find their own space throughout the compilation.
