2022Resumen
Nowadays, obesity and overweight are one of the public health problems
worldwide, seriously affecting other pathologies and reducing people's quality of life.
At dietary level, in addition to caloric restriction, other treatment methods such as
intermittent fasting arise; however, its effectiveness is unknown, which is why this research
project is proposed, with the general objective of assessing the effectiveness of intermittent
fasting as a weight loss method in the overweight or obese adult population of the Canary
Islands. For this, a controlled and randomized clinical trial will be carried out in the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service of the University Hospital Complex of the Canary Islands
(CHUC), with all those patients diagnosed as overweight or obese who regularly attend
check-ups and meet the criteria of inclusion. We will make up two groups: control group (will
not perform caloric restriction, will follow a healthy lifestyle pattern) and intervention group
(will perform 16:8 intermittent fasting protocol in addition to a healthy lifestyle). Controls will
be carried out at the beginning, at 3 months and at the end, in which sociodemographic
variables and lifestyle, anthropometric measurements, analytics and vital signs will be
analyzed. They will also be accompanied by questionnaires on quality of life, eating habits
and adherence to intermittent fasting.
This study will provide further evidence about the effectiveness of this dietary protocol in weight reduction, while providing health professionals with a more complementary
or alternative tool to treat this problem.
